Jadrová a vyraďovacia spoločnosť, a. s. (JAVYS, a.s.) continues to implement one of the most extensive nuclear decommissioning projects in Europe. The cumulative results of the V1 NPP decommissioning process in Jaslovské Bohunice confirm continued progress in the dismantling of technological equipment, decontamination of buildings and safe management of radioactive waste.
“The V1 NPP decommissioning in Jaslovské Bohunice is among the most successful nuclear power plant decommissioning projects in Europe,” emphasized Peter Gerhart, Chairman of the Board of Directors of JAVYS.
This process marks successful completion of several phases, such as the decommissioning of the primary circuit, where the reactor itself was once located, the steam generator pressure vessels, and virtually the entire turbine hall where power was once generated.
By the end of 2025, more than 11,600 tons of primary radioactive waste, including contaminated technological equipment and building structures, had been processed as part of the V1 NPP decommissioning. At the same time, 491 tons of secondary solid radioactive waste and nearly 1,000 m³ of liquid radioactive waste were generated. The decontamination of contaminated material was highly successful, with a rate exceeding 98%.
The progress in projects and current status of the V1 NPP decommissioning under the Bohunice Programme were also presented during the Bohunice Programme Monitoring Committee Meeting, attended by representatives of the European Commission, the Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic, the Slovak Innovation and Energy Agency, and other partners involved in the V1 NPP decommissioning. During the meeting, updated project schedules, the scope of activities carried out, the status of funding, and planned activities for the upcoming period were presented. As part of the Bohunice Programme, updated parameters for projects focused on management of radioactive waste generated during the V1 NPP decommissioning were also presented. The RAO.01–D4.2-R and RAO.01–D4.7-R projects involve the processing, transport, storage, and disposal of radioactive waste produced during the dismantling, decontamination, and demolition activities. The Bohunice Programme is a long-term European Union mechanism aimed at supporting the V1 NPP decommissioning and safe management of radioactive waste. From the start of the programme through the end of 2025, more than 891 million euros were spent on the V1 NPP decommissioning, of which more than 517 million euros came from European Union funds.
Jaslovské Bohunice also hosted the first meeting of participating countries under the Nuclear Decommissioning Assistance Programme, which brings together the experiences of Slovakia, Bulgaria, and Lithuania in decommissioning nuclear power plants; these experiences are then used to develop recommendations and guidelines for other EU member states.
