The purpose of the National Radioactive Waste Repository (NRWR) Mochovce is to store low and intermediate activity RAW from the operation and decommissioning of the Jaslovské Bohunice and Mochovce nuclear power plants.

Part of the project is the elaboration of a Preliminary Environmental Study on basis of which the Ministry of Environment SR will establish the extent of assessment applicable to the Assessment Report.

The NRA SR resolution No. 400/2011 on the approval of the first stage of V1 NPP decommissioning of the 19th of July 2011 was issued on the basis of application of company JAVYS, a.s., dated 17th of December 2010 and the approval from the European Commission in accordance with article 37 of the EURATOM Treaty.

Complex technological process of treatment of nuclear fuel from mining of uranium ore to storage of spent nuclear fuel is called the fuel cycle. When mentioning the final permanent storage of spent nuclear fuel, we speak about an open fuel cycle, and in case of reprocessing of utilizable part of spent nuclear fuel to new nuclear fuel, we speak about closed fuel cycle.

Spent nuclear fuel from pressurized water reactors represents a valuable nuclear material, since it still has a higher content of 235U than natural uranium, moreover, there are also new fission isotopes 239Pu and 241Pu.

Jadrová a vyraďovacia spoločnosť (JAVYS), is a company with 100% of the shares held by the state, who exercises its rights as a shareholder through the Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic.

The forming of this company is tightly related to the privatization of the Slovenské elektrárne company. One of the major postponing conditions in the transaction documents on the privatization of Slovenské elektrárne, was the detachment of selected nuclear assets (detached plants SE-VYZ and SE-EBO V1), in which the Italian ENEL company was not interested.

The story of the V1 NPP began in 1966, when it was decided to build a second power plant in Jaslovské Bohunice. Initially an A1 type power plant was considered, such as the one that was already under construction.

The A1 NPP was the first nuclear power plant in the former CSSR. Work on the projects started in 1956. The A1 Power plant was designed as an experimental facility so it could verify the feasibility of using uranium as reactor fuel.
